Exactly. I'm not actually a fan of Dickens, but his modernist urban landscape--the city of fog archetype really--is...yeah. You can't escape that in English-language literature.
Joyce would be the other big influence. His urban landscape is more surreal than Dickens', still a big big emphasis on fog :P and a similar sort of basic idea, but infused with visceral emotion (and, well, Irish :P). The city of, say, 'The Dead', that feeling is very strong in my mind. That sense of longing inherent in the urban environment.
