I am 95% sure we're talking late 19thC, yeah.

Part of what Colin wants with the tattoo is for it to be something Ryan already had, because Brendon doesn't know he's been turned into this (and 8 years changes a lot about appearance at that age), so he needs some solid proof. So yeah, it needs to be sort of a done by hand, sentimental home thing more than a brand mark (there are other things happening in that line of discussion, big time :P). So the lily was coming more from there I think than the branded fleur de lys. It's a nice comparison, though.

I'd be interested to write some Ryan thinking about that, how it's been tarnished, how this beautiful, pure thing that was his memory of his mother, of goodness and safety and beauty and wonder and hope, has become just a slightly different version of the slave mark, how it's too close to the fleur de lys on the other slaves for it to ever be pure again. Hm. Maybe ;D
