So perhaps during Ryan's gruelling first year of hell (etc etc), he meets someone who's already a slave (one William Beckett, perhaps, or maybe an OMC would work better) who kind of teaches him what the people in charge don't - like how to deal with the stress and little tricks for how to make stuff better for yourself and ways to get stuff over with quicker (similar to how they all help Violet Sanford in Coyote Ugly? tell me if that reference doesn't help, I'll elaborate) and he ends up as kind of a hard edged mentor?
so this could go two ways - a) he's the only person who's nice to Ryan for a year or so, Ryan finds comfort in him and things, and then he gets sold on or whatever and Ryan loses him, or b) he's also an asshole as well as helpful and maybe uses Ryan? or isn't that nice to him, and idk, takes Ryan's loaves at suppertime or steals a sketch he has of Brendon or something. um.
either way I guess the whole thing adds to the idea of Ryan toughening up, and either by losing this guy or being used by him, it makes Ryan angrier/bitterer/haughtier/hotter.
